Wes Moynihan 15th century choral music, time-stretched and blurred into blissful ambient drift. Beautiful music for long winter nights. Candlelight luminosity is recommended during plays...

A thing of beauty.

Tippy Bonanza This was one of my favorite pieces when I sang in a men’s chorus in college. The ethereal highs we first tenors sang against the droning deep lows the basses sang were otherworldly and exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. This treatment of the piece captures what I felt when I sang this some 25 years ago in a surprising, absorbing, utterly mesmerizing way. Brilliant and haunting.

about

Dylan Henner says:

"Two threads lead me to this music. Firstly, as a boy I spent a lot of time sitting at the back of cold churches, reading or doing homework, waiting for my mum's choir rehearsal to finish. This bored me a lot when I was a kid. But I realise - a bit older - that the regular immersion in choral music left me with a really deep love for it. Now, I'm totally obsessed with it. I spend loads of time with composers like Gabriel Fauré, Thomas Tallis, Josquin des Prez.

Secondly, I've come to understand Early Music through a contemporary lens. A lot of characteristics found in Early Music - the tempo, the simplicity, the appeal to deep senses instead of surface interests - coincides with what we would now call ambient music. A lot of the choral music I like most could be seen as a kind of proto-ambient music. This includes Josquin des Prez, and this yearningly beautiful piece Deploration sur la Mort de Johannes Ockeghem, a memorial to the death of a friend.

I can't take credit for the piece. It's des Prez' composition. But in listening to it, I realised just how much influence I take from it. I processed a recording of the piece (heavily, through a variety of reverbs, filters and time-stretches) to try to bridge the gap between its original form and a version of it that views through a contemporary lens - highlighting those elements we could call ambient music."
